World Round Up of Major News Stories March 2015

1. March 10 Hillary Clinton Used Personal Email for Federal Affairs

Details emerged this month that Hillary Clinton used a personal email server from her home when she worked for the State Department.  She also used an iPad and phone using her personal email.  Clinton’s attorney stated that she turned over all government related emails to the State Department, while deleting personal emails.  The State Department is investigating the situation and looking over about 50,000 of Clinton’s emails.

2. March 17 Israel Prime Minister Reelected

In a neck-to-neck race, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu won against top opponent Isaac Herzog of the Zionist Union.  Netanyahu is adamant against the development of a Palestinian state, an item that is on President Obama’s agenda.

3. March 24  German Plane Crash May Have Been Intentional

Germanwings Flight 9525 crashed into the French Alps.  All 150 people on board were killed.  The crash is still under investigation as details emerged that the co-pilot Lubitz deliberately locked the captain  out of the cockpit in order to steer the plane into the ground in a fatal crash.  Lubitz’s mental health may have been a factor in this murder-suicide.

4. March 27  ISIS Targeted Through Airstrikes

The United States launched 20 airstrikes on Tikrit in an effort to hit ISIS locations.  After the two days of airstrikes, Iraqi troops plan to seek out and fight ISIS militants in Tikrit.

5. March 28-30  Saudi Arabia Attacks Yemen At Civilians’ Expense

Saudi Arabia released airstrikes on Yemen as part of a mission supported by the United States to target Iranian rebels.  29 civilians were killed as result.   Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz says that he seeks a negotiation for the conflict with Yemen.

6. March 30 Boston Marathon Trial Underway

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is being tried for the death penalty in the bombings that occurred at the Boston Marathon in 2013. Prosecutors recently presented evidence on the death of an 8-year-old boy as result of the bombings, and will continue to argue for Tsarnaev’s execution.

7. March 31 Deadline for Iran Nuclear Deal Looms

The United States is expected to reach a deal with Iran regarding Iran’s use of nuclear energy and technology.  President Obama believes the deal with strengthen Iran’s economy and the United States’ relationship with the country.  Opposing Republicans sent a letter to Iranian leaders stating that any deal made with the President could lose effect once he leaves office.
