The Theory of Everything

The Theory of Everything, directed by James Marsh, tells the inspiring true story of astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, played by Eddie Redmayne. Hawking has become recognizable by his robotic voice, and many people know him not only of the most brilliant scientists to ever live, but as a strong proponent of atheism. This movie highlights Hawking’s youth and the obstacles he has had to overcome in his life.

While a college student studying at England’s prestigious Cambridge University, Hawking falls in love with Jane Wilde, played by Felicity Jones, whom he later marries. The couple’s strength is tested when Hawking is diagnosed with motor neuron disease at the young age of 21.

Due to his illness, Hawking’s physical abilities, over time, become extremely limited, however, his mental abilities continue to grow as he continues his scientific research.

I thought that the cast of this movie was incredible. Eddie Redmayne, in particular, perfectly executes this difficult role.  Redmayne did a phenomenal job demonstrating Hawking’s weakening physical abilities, which would be a challenge for any actor.

Stephen Hawking’s story, although heartbreaking, is quite inspirational. One line from the movie that truly grasps Hawking’s outlook on life states, “There should be no boundaries to human endeavor. We are all different. However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. While there’s life, there is hope.”
