The Proposal

Directed by Anne Fletcher with a star-studded cast including Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds and Betty White, The Proposal is a lighthearted romantic comedy about a stern businesswoman looking to save her job.

Sandra Bullock plays Margaret Tate, a fierce New York publishing editor, who is ruthless when it comes to her staff, especially with her assistant, Andrew Paxton, played by Ryan Reynolds.

When the company threatens Tate, a Canadian native, with deportation, Tate comes up with a clever scheme. She forces Paxton to marry her so she can become a citizen, promising him a quick divorce once she gets her United States citizenship.  In order to save his job along with a bribe to get his book published if he marries Tate, Paxton reluctantly agrees.

What the two are not ready for are the hilarious shenanigans of Paxton’s relatives when the “couple” visits Paxton’s family in Alaska.  Awkward confrontations, unexpected visitors, and a tangled web of secrets combined with the allure of romance between the two is a winning combination in this romantic comedy.

Though dramatic at times, The Proposal contains over-the-top comedic scenes and a satisfying plot line.  The ridiculousness of some of the predicaments facing Tate and Paxton leaves the audience in tears of laughter.  Bullock and Reynolds both deliver quality performances, showing various sides to their characters’ and their range of acting capabilities.

The Proposal is a modern classic romantic comedy that will entertain a wide span of age groups. Though the movie is not necessarily centered around Valentine’s Day, this movie is great for a girls night out or for a pair of lovebirds to watch together.
