The Birds

This 1963 Alfred Hitchcock flick doesn’t sound too scary.  Just birds right?  That’s what I thought before I realized just how inventive and eerie this movie truly is.

Set in in northern California, strange events occur when socialite Melanie Daniels  moves to a small town to follow a prospective boyfriend, Mitch Brenner. She brings along with her a present – two love birds. As the movie continues, black birds begin to increase in number. At first, they sit quietly on telephone wires or the monkey bars  in the school park, but slowly they begin to attack citizens in a few minor incidents.  Still, nothing to worry about. Shortly, though the birds appear in the masses, and viciously pursue the children and adults in the small community.

There is no music in The Birds, making it seem even more real.  There is no explanation for the events, raising questions of what could have triggered the outbreak.  I still can’t answer that question even after watching the movie several times.  The genius of Alfred Hitchcock emerges.  This is not a scare-your-pants-off movie; it’s a movie that freaks you out and plays with your mind.  If you’re in the mood for creepy, eerie, Halloween flick, The Birds is the right choice.
