Selma

The 54 mile journey to secure voting rights for all citizens, particularly blacks, takes its credit with Martin Luther King and the infamous 1965 walks from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. This Oscar nominated film begins with the charismatic King, played by David Oyelowo, accepting his Nobel Peace Prize. The movie captures the tension and the violence of the time period, the movement to secure voting rights, and the obstacles King and his followers faced.

The cast also features strong performances by  Oprah Winfrey, Carmen Ejogo, Tim Roth, and Tom Wilkinson. Director Ava DuVernay does a great job of capturing the hardships during this tumultuous time period of American history.

The movie captures the horror and the sorrow of the Civil Rights movement and the monumental impact King had on America’s history. Selma is a great movie choice if you love civil rights history or are just seeking a powerful story line.
