Popular “pop” music is composed of overplayed tunes from sensationalized artists. Local radio stations such as B96 and Kiss-FM endorse these artists and their catchy songs.

But why should you have to settle only for the same 20 songs over and over? Sure, Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus have some great songs, but you should not be bound to listening to just what the radio gives you.

For the pop music fan out there that is looking for more: THERE IS HOPE! This is said in confidence since there truly is a plethora of bands out there besides the Billboard Top 100. There is so much music that has yet to be discovered by one person or the next.

Here are some options for every pop music lover:

Listen to Sales, a pop duo from Orlando, FL. Lauren Morgan, the lead singer and guitarist, paired up with Jordan Shih, who plays a slew of instruments, ranging from the guitar to the synth. Sales creates catchy guitar-based riffs and groups them with lighthearted lyrics.

Their latest LP released was Sales LP in 2016. This 15 song album includes popular songs such as “Ivy” and “Jamz.”

Sales will be playing in Chicago, IL on June 18, 2016, at Schubas Tavern. The show is at 8:00 PM and is all ages.

Here is a song from Sales called “Chinese New Year.”

After you check out Sales, give a listen to Strangers You Know. Grady Lee and Adam Haagen make up the electronic-pop band that writes great dancing songs about heartbreak, movies, and everything else in between.

The latest release of theirs was Loosen up the Leash, which came out on March 11, 2016.

Strangers You Know does not have any upcoming shows in Chicago, IL, but they just did play at Coachella!

Check out the song “Be It” here.

Everyone must listen to Frankie Cosmos. Her real name is Greta Simone Kline and she is the daughter of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates. The New York-based artist writes short songs filled with honest and fun lyrics. Her use of the keyboard brightens up her tunes and brings a liveliness to each song.

Her last album release was on April 1, 2016. The 15 song album is called Next Thing.

Frankie Cosmos was in town on April 27, 2016 at Lincoln Hall for an all ages show.

Here is “Young” by Frankie Cosmos.

BRYCE is the stage name for the gorgeous singer songwriter, Bryce Gilbertson, who hails from Texas. She sings electronic pop and has a smooth voice that can be listened to for hours. Her universal lyrics about relationships are catchy and relateable.

She came out with a self-titled, five-track single on March 8, 2016, which includes the track listed below.

She does not have any upcoming shows or events, but is definitely an artist on the rise to be aware of!

Here is BRYCE’s song “Burning Out.”

Another Pop band to check out is Sports. This Oklahoma band is made up of Jacob Theriot, Christian Theriot, and Cale Chronister. The dreamy electronic sounds of this band mixed with echoey voices bring a summer vibe to the band’s songs.

This band’s last release was their first full album in 2015. The album is called Naked All The Time.

Sports has no upcoming events or shows.

Here is a song called “You Are The Right One.”

Scrap the same old pop music played on repeat and switch to something new! Try any of these bands or artists, which can all be found of Spotify, iTunes, and YouTube.

Sales, Strangers You Know, Frankie Cosmos, BRYCE, and Sports are all great alternatives to listening to overplayed pop music on the radio. Not only do these five bands sound great, they are not too well known (so you can trump your friends by knowing new cool music)!
