Perfect Summer Jobs for High Schoolers

Perfect Summer Jobs for High Schoolers

Ahh, high school. The era of curfews, sleeping past noon, and, of course, being dirt broke.

Maybe not all high schoolers…but I know that most of us have our phases where we can’t scrape up two dimes to rub together. Obviously, the best way to counteract being broke is to start making money. After some personal experience, and research online, I have decided upon a few perfect jobs (both official and unofficial) for high schoolers to take on for a little extra money.

Since many of us hardly have time to breathe during the school year because of homework, sports, clubs, and volunteering, I suggest working summer jobs to avoid boredom and have fun while getting a paycheck.

Any job outdoors is a plus during the summer for me. Life guarding, in my opinion, is the best high school job you can get—fresh air, happy environment, time in the sun, and decent pay. Of course, a lifeguard also has responsibilities, such as saving lives, so be prepared to work hard with a job like this. However, “work hard play hard” always gives a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day. Along with lifeguard, some other outdoor jobs you can’t go wrong with include being a caddy, camp counselor, an ice-cream vendor, etc.

If outdoorsy jobs aren’t exactly your forte, there are bound to be dozens of jobs in your area that are looking for helpers like you! The first one that comes to mind for me is the most common, yet most underrated way to make money in high school—babysitting.

To be completely honest, you will make more money babysitting than you will with any other starter job. No taxes, no early morning shifts (typically), and no difficult customers. I think it’s important to take advantage of babysitting while you are in the prime age to do so!

For those of you who don’t have anyone to babysit for, I suggest taking initiative by making flyers and creating connections for yourself through neighbors, friends, and parents.

During the summer, lots of businesses are looking for a helping hand, so put yourself out there! If you keep an open mind and look for a job that fits your interests, I guarantee you will find a job that works for you.
