When the 2015 tennis season came to an end, the team discovered an alternative way to continue their newly ended season. Junior Kirby Weiland and her mom, Mrs. Weiland, the JV tennis coach, created a new club– Paddle Tennis.

Paddle tennis is a type of tennis played on a smaller court using wooden or plastic paddles and a rubber ball. The court and rules are similar to tennis. The team practices at Westmoreland Country Club every Thursday from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

Because paddle tennis is similar to regular tennis, many tennis players have joined the club.  However, you don’t need to be a tennis athlete to join the paddle tennis club. The club is open to anyone interested in exercise and swinging a club and hitting a ball.

Kirby Weiland says, “You do not need to be on the tennis team to play! Everyone is welcome!”

Every week, the team arrives at the country club around 3:30. After they arrive, they split up with their friends or teammates. The girls either keep score or play games against each other up to three points, and then they mix up the teams. Finally, after an afternoon of paddle tennis, they go inside the country club and drink hot chocolate.

The paddle tennis club has gotten a thumbs up from the members of the club. Paddle tennis is being offered this semester and the club will continue during second semester. It is not too late to join paddle tennis! You can email Kirby for more details.
