Claim:
On January 7th, 2024, Mouse Trap News on TikTok released a video about the legal drinking age at Disney World being removed. The video stated that Disney had removed all drinking age restrictions allowing anyone to purchase an alcoholic beverage. Mouse Trap News claimed that after a year-long battle with the State of Florida to get a resort exemption to lower the drinking age to 18, that now Disney was fully exempt from the over-the-of-21 drinking age. There was no proven evidence of Disney removing the drinking age, but this video sparked many people to question whether Disney had removed all restrictions.
Who’s behind the information?
We started to check this information by doing some lateral reading. We left the TikTok page and went to Google to fact-check this information. We started by searching for the Disney Drinking Age. Sure enough, a page came up from the Disney World Website providing all the rules and restrictions for drinking in their parks. This website seemed very legit but we wanted to make sure it was real. We went into another tab and searched Disney World. We clicked on the website that Google had provided next to the address, and it turned out to be the same website. It was legit! We also went on the Florida Senate website which we fact-checked as another legit website. Though Mouse Traps News says in their TikTok bio that all news is 100% false, many people miss this important piece of information due to the format of the TikTok app.
Evidence and Experts
Mouse Trap News has no evidence or proof to support the claim made about Disney’s drinking age. They quoted false evidence, saying that the state of Florida has lifted the restrictions. After doing our google searches, and looking at not only the Disney World website but also the Florida Senate website these websites proved the false claim that MouseTrap News made. Both websites revealed that in order to drink in Disney World you need to have a proper form of identification stating that you are 21 or older. Mouse Trap News has been known for creating false claims, so we recommend checking liable sources instead of believing fake profiles, like them.
