Terrorism Attack in Paris
11 people were shot at the Charlie Hebdo magazine publications office in Paris on January 7, 2015 by terrorists associated with Al Qaeda. Five others were shot outside of the headquarters. The magazine is known for its satirical cartoons found offensive to various world religions.
Islamic Militants Slaughter Hundreds in Nigeria
The Nigerian-based terrorism organization Boko Haram killed anywhere from 100-2,000 people in the town of Baga on January 20. Their leader, Abubakar Shekau threatens that the group will gain more power and continue its rage of violence soon.
Annual State of the Union Address Promises Change
President Obama delivered the annual State of the Union address on January 20, 2015. He spoke on many issues including the terrorism threats of ISIS, climate change, free community college and tax reform. The president vowed to veto any sanctioning concerning Iran or Keystone Pipeline bills.
Saudi Arabian King Dies at Age 90
King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud of Saudi Arabia died on January 16, 2015. His declining health and possible dementia in recent months forced him to be admitted to a hospital in Riyadh. His half brother Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, age 79, will succeed King Abdullah.
Man Revives From Coma Lasting Over a Decade
South African Martin Pistorius woke up from a 12 year coma this month. In a vegetative state, Pisotrius was able to hear and feel, but was not able to move or signal his consciousness. Doctors link his coma to cryptococcal meningitis.
Official Champion Finally Named in Football
The Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Oregon Ducks 42-20 in the first National Championship game for college football. This is the first time a bracket and playoff system has been used to determine an National college football champion outside of the traditional Bowl games.
New England Patriots Win Super Bowl
The Super Bowl was true to form in 2015. An overall tone of somber commercials, a cartoonish performance during half-time by Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz, and an offensive blunder by Seattle made for some Super Bowl drama. By the end of the game, the Patriots won over the Seahawks by a score of 28-24.
