World News Round Up: Summer Edition

Orlando Nightclub Shooting: June 12, 2016
On June 12, 2016, Omar Mir Seddique Mateen killed 49 people and injured 53 more at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. This was the largest mass shooting that has ever taken place. This mass shooting was referred to as a terrorist attack and a hate crime. This brought up the debate for change to gun control laws in the United States, but no changes have been made.

Brexit: June 23, 2016
On June 23, 2013, a vote took place in Great Britain that asked voters to make the decision of leaving the European Union or to stay in it. The majority of British voters voted to leave the EU with created much backlash in Great Britain.

Nice, France Terror Attack: July 14, 2016
On July 14, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel drove a cargo truck through a crowded street in Nice, France and killed 86 people. He injured 434 people. This attack has been referred to an act of terror. As investigation continues, more accomplices have been revealed and have been arrested by French authorities.

RNC: July  18 – 21, 2016 DNC: July 25-28, 2016
The Democratic and Republican conventions were held in July. At the RNC, Donald Trump clinched the nomination for the Republican candidate for the 2016 presidential election. At the DNC, Hillary Clinton took the Democratic nomination for the presidential election. At both of these conventions, many politicians and public speakers gathered from the same political party to speak of their plans for the next four years if their candidate is elected.

Olympics Aug 5-Aug 21, 2016
On Aug. 5, the opening ceremony for the beginning of the 2016 Summer Olympics kicked off in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The United States’ athletes received the most medals in the total medal count, when Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time with a total medal count of 28. The US also defended their title of gold in women’s gymnastics with the team of Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas, and Maddie Kocian, also know on as The Final Five.

Earthquake in Italy Aug. 25, 2016
On August 25, 2016, an earthquake with a 6.2 magnitude occurred in small Italian towns outside Norcia, Italy, and killed about 247 people that have been found. Due to the severity of the earthquake, bodies are still being found in the ruins and are not identifiable.
