Chicago’s South Side, especially District 6, has been riddled with crime.  In just one week, from Nov. 23, 2015 to Nov. 29, 2015, there were over 65 crimes committed in this one neighborhood alone.

One of the most shocking crimes that not only rocked Chicago, but the country took place  on Nov. 2, 2015. Tyshawn Lee, 9, was lured into an alley-way and was then executed, according to police reports, by several gang members.

Lee was walking to his grandmother’s home, when he stopped at a neighborhood park. He put down his basketball to play on the swing set. A man emerged from black SUV with two other men. The man started to play with Lee’s basketball and then persuaded Lee into a nearby alley. The black SUV reappeared when Lee was in the alley with the man. Tyshawn Lee, the young boy, was then shot five times resulting in his death.

Former Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said, “Tyshawn Lee was murdered in probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime that I’ve witnessed in 35 years of policing.”

It is suspected that Lee was killed by members of the Black P. Stones gang in revenge against the boy’s father, Pierre Stokes, who had hurt or disobeyed the gang in some way.

The Black P. Stone Nation, or BPSN, is a Chicago-based gang that was organized  in 1986. There are seven branches of the gang including:  Gangster Stones, Jet Black Stones, Rubinites, Future Stones, PR Stones, Corner Stones, and Black P. Stones.

Only one of the three men suspected of Lee’s assassination was arrested. Corey Morgan, 27, a close family friend of the Lees, was charged with Tyshawn’s murder. Morgan has pleaded innocent.

Judge Peggy Chiampas, ordered Morgan to be held without bail. Although he has been charged with first degree murder, he has not, at this time, been sentenced.

After the tragic incident, Karla Lee, Tyshawn’s mother, started a GoFundMe to help pay for the funeral expenses for her son at St. Sabina Church. More than $17,000 were raised on that GoFundMe page. Sources later confirmed that Karla used the money to buy herself a new car.

The two other two witnesses or accomplices have not been found or named; yet, the search for young Tyshawn’s killers continues.

Chicago mayor, Rham Emmanuel said, “I would like to commend Superintendent Garry McCarthy, the leadership of the Chicago Police Department, and the men and women of the police force for identifying the individuals believed to have targeted and killed nine-year-old Tyshawn Lee. All of Chicago grieves for this young life taken far too soon, and we must ensure that justice is served.”
