Sophomore Class Embraces Their School Spirit
Many students agree that the sophomore class is not known for being the most spirited. When people think about the class of 2019 in relation to school spirit, they may think about this year’s pep rally when the class cheer was less than enthusiastic or they might think back to an editorial written last year in this paper that called sophomores out to be more school spirited.
In many ways, that view-point of the sophomore class is understandable. But, I thoroughly believe that this reputation is something that will not define us or stay with us. As a member of the sophomore class, I know that we are currently making a genuine effort to be a more positive class and to truly participate and show our school spirit more.
For example, during the annual gnimocemoH week we made an extra effort, as an entire class, to participate during all the events. That week, sophomores came to school dressed to the themes of each day. We worked to decorate our doors, and we not only cheered at the next pep-rally, but we cheered louder than we ever had before.
The sophomore spirit is an attitude that, I believe, has carried forth past gnimocemoH. In the many weeks afterwards, we have truly become nicer to each other and, in general, have exhibited a more positive attitude.
I have seen sophomores participate heavily in activities such as the Thanksgiving Food Drive. I honestly think that we are beginning to adopt a sense of pride in our school, and we seem to embrace the idea that school spirit is about making our school better. Adopting these attitudes can be sort of hard for some sophomores. Many sophomores still feel as though their previous reputation holds them down in some ways.
Sophomore Meghan McCabe said, “We are trying be more spirited, but it feels like everyone is trying to push down on our spirit, so we don’t know how to react.” This belief isn’t a particularly uncommon feeling among the sophomore class at all.
McCabe is someone who participates in many school activities, such as pep-rallies and Ambassadors Club. She tries to be a positive person around Regina Dominican in all that she does. Even people who feel as though what they are doing isn’t being noticed; they are still making the sophomore class a bit better each and every day.
However, this doesn’t change the fact that the sophomore class has come together and they have made substantial efforts to be more positive and to participate more. However, these changes are happening slowly, so its understandable that changes in opinion will happen slowly, too.
To address the rest of the sophomore class, let’s keep this positive attitude up. At this moment, we are being better and more positive than we have been. I think that, in time, we will shake off our reputation and become the most spirited class.
But if we are to do that, we need to continue improving ourselves. If we continue to make ourselves better, we will achieve better things.
