On Wednesday, Nov. 18, a panel of six people ranging from 17-91 years old spoke at the Generational Mashup during Social Media Week in Chicago. The panel were asked questions about specific social media accounts, their understanding and usage of social media, etc. The goal of the panel was to learn from five generations about how to better market social media online.

Two students from Regina participated last year. This year Maggie McNaughton ’17 attended and  Ellen Chirikos ’16, participated as a member of the panel.

Maggie said, “The panel did not necessarily change my views on social media, but it was very interesting to see how five generations use social media differently.”

McNaughton thought that it was interesting to hear how more thirty year olds use Facebook more than teenagers. Teens tend to use social media apps  such as Instagram and Snapchat, instead of Facebook. This thought  was emphasized by Chirikos during the panel discussion.

Overall, the panel was very informative about the various perspectives that members of different generations hold about the use of social media. From teen Ellen Chirikos to a 91 year-old senior citizen, social media has become a major player in marketing products through social media.
