Regina Dominican: High School or Physical Therapy Center?
Something seemed different walking down the halls of Regina Dominican. As I looked around, I noticed a common trend. It seemed that every other student was in a boot, cast, sling, or brace.
The month of February means basketball season is winding down. Therefore, it’s no surprise that so many basketball players are injured. Audrey Jahns ’15 sprained her ankle in practice. Maeve Degnan ’15 broke two fingers and Lauren Vaughn-Snapp ’15 twisted her knee. Barbra Acacia ’15 twisted her ankle and wore a brace for several weeks. Colleen Palmer ’17 also sprained her ankle in a game against St. Ignatius and had to use crutches for a week.
However, basketball is not the only source of injury for Panther girls. Christi Lato ’15, fell down her stairs at home and sprained her cocyx. Addy Donahue ’18 received a concussion from a kicked volleyball in gym class with the ball hitting her square in the face.
Vivienne O’Bryan ’18, broke her toe by dropping a water bottle on it during class. Erin Patterson ’17 fractured her wrist by slipping on black ice at home. Colette Cooney ’17 has tendinitis in her right foot, and has a stress fracture in her navicular bone. She says her doctor told her it was because she was running too much.
Laura Fino ’16, broke her metatarsal when she fell down stairs and instead of staying off of it and icing her foot, she danced on it. “Dancing on it ultimately made it worse.” said Fino.
Shelixis Poole ’18, hurt her ankle by attempting to do a flip at home. She landed awkwardly on her ankle and then someone fell on it, making it even worse. Katelyn Peace ’16 hurt her back by falling during cheer-leading and now has to wear a back brace.
Christina Starcevic ’17, hurt her shoulder during the volleyball season. She strained her rotator cuff and now needs to attend physical rehabilitation. Selma Redzovic ’16 also sprained her ankle during volleyball season. She fell on it and needed to wear a brace.
Karlyn Manley ’16 slipped on black ice and hurt her shoulder while Mary Brikha ’17 received a concussion by running into a door at home.
Regina Dominican is a place to learn and to have fun… and apparently it’s a place that can be seen as both a high school and physical therapy center.
