Yabba Dabba Do! Cubs WIN the World Series!
This year, the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians took part in arguably one of the most exciting World Series played of all time. This is the first time, ladies and gentlemen, since 1908 — yest, 1908 that journalists have had the opportunity to report that the Cubs have won the World Series.
This year’s match up was between the two teams with the longest championship droughts in all of baseball history. The Cubs had not won a World Series since 1908, 106 years ago! The last time the Indians won the World Series was 68 years ago in 1948.
After winning the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-2, the Cubs moved on to face the American League Champions, the Cleveland Indians in the World Series. The Indians started the series out strong, but the Cubbies pulled through during some very tense moments. Their series record went from 1-3 to 4-3 in three games straight.
Because of the American League victory at the All-Star game earlier in the year, the Cleveland Indians had home field advantage. The first two games were played at Cleveland’s Progressive Field, home of the Indians. After a devastating first game in which the Cubs fell to the Indians, 6-0, they bounced back, defeating the Indians, 5-1 in the second game. The teams split the first two games, starting out the series 1-1 heading to Wrigley Field.
The Indians won the game 3 and 4 at Wrigley Field. With the record being 3-1 in favor of the Indians, game 5 was a must win for the Chicago Cubs. This game was a close one, with the Cubs just barely surviving, winning 3-2. This was the third Cubs victory that the infamous Wrigley Field has ever seen in the World Series.
Energized and excited, the young Cubs team dominated game 6 back in Cleveland. After an exciting series, the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs were tied 3-3, heading into game 7, the final game of the year.
Game 7 was another riveting match. The Cubs were up 6-3 in the in the 7th inning. People were already celebrating a victory for the Cubs, when suddenly, in the 8th inning, the Indians scored 3 runs, tying the game 6-6.
One extra inning and a rain delay later, the Cubs scored 2 runs. With one out in the way of the Chicago’s’ victory, the Indians scored a home run. One run, however, was not enough. The Cubs closed out the 10th inning with a pass from Bryant to Rizzo for the game winning out.
This journalist is happy to write, “The Chicago Cubs successfully defeated the Cleveland Indians to win the 2016 World Series!”
