“Joy in Leadership” With Mary Stenson
Mary Stenson has been with Regina Dominican High School since 2007. She is currently the co-department chairperson of the Mathematics Department and the co-moderator of Student Council.
How would you describe your leadership style?
Leaders work with extraordinary team members. I have had that great opportunity at Regina Dominican. Sharing ideas and experiences is a large part of my leadership style.
Describe the most important quality, value, or characteristic trait that you feel is essential of an effective leader.
TRUST and COMMITMENT are the most important characteristics of a good leader.
What is the hardest part of being a leader?
The hardest part of being a leader is juggling several projects at one time. You need to stay focused, be aware of your audience, and pay attention to details. Most importantly, though, is to do all of these things with joy, and to remember to have fun!
What person, famous or not, who has had an impact on you as a leader?
Dr. Christine Kelly, a former colleague who has since died, had the most impact on me as a leader. She was an extraordinary educator, friend, and mentor; who shared her ideas and love of teaching with me.
What advice would you give graduating seniors?
Your work here is done. Look to the future and go change the world with your passion. However, never forget where you came from. Saint Catherine of Sienna said it best: “Be who God made you to be and you will set the world on fire!”
