Is Prom Worth It? I Say YES!

Prom, where can I even begin? Prom didn’t officially make it into America’s yearbooks until the 1930s. Today, high school prom is considered a rite of passage where students can spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars to make the evening perfect.

I have  been to one prom as a junior this year. I can honestly say I love prom. I love the idea of getting dressed up, taking cute pictures with my friends, and having an amazing time dancing on the dance floor.

People often say that choosing a prom dress is as important as choosing a wedding dress. Appointments fill up quickly at David’s Bridal and Peaches. I went shopping at Bloomingdales. At first, I was reluctant to look there, but as I walked into the prom section, burst of colors and sparkles filled my eyes.

It took me all together two days at two different locations at Bloomingdales, as well as looking at several other stores to decide on my prom dress. Choosing a prom dress was, frankly, a hard decision, which makes me not too excited to choose my wedding dress in the distant future.

I’m going be honest, I went all out for prom. I got a new dress, new shoes, a spray tan, and had my hair and makeup done. I realize now that I will most likely never wear my dress again (unless I am going to some event like in “Gossip Girl”, but every time I look at my dress, I will remember how much fun I had.

The dance itself can be awkward at times, but very fun in others. The simple dinner conversation that goes on starts the night on a slow note, but once the shoes are taken off and people start running to the dance floor to “Hit the Quan.” The atmosphere at prom soon turns into a fun night club atmosphere shared by friends.

I tend to be a dancer at dances , so prom is no exception. I am always hitting the dance floor with my terrible moves (including “The Whip” and “The Nae Nae”), which makes the evening such a great and special time.

Prom has given me so many memories. I am so excited to go again next year as a senior and have fun again with my friends.

Is the cost and the drama of prom worth it for one night? I say unequivocally, YES!
