Post Season Sports Spotlights Swimming and Cross Country

Swimming

Regina’s swim team concluded their season with a banquet Sunday, Nov 2.  Their focus for the 2016 season was to work on cutting their personal times.

Junior Murphy Weiland said, “I loved it, it helped me focus on what I needed to personally improve to help the team as a whole.”

This season goal seemed to work as all team members achieved personal time cuts and  made it to conference and then sectionals. On a sadder note, the team of 5 will being saying goodbye to seniors Stephanie Zalinski and Julia Rottmann.

Zalinski said “The past three swim seasons have been a great experience and I will definitely miss swimming for Regina next year.” Seniors always seem to hold a lot of weight and have a special place on the team. Stephanie and Julia are no exception and will be greatly missed!

Cross Country

The Cross Country team ended their season after qualifying as a team for regionals and sectionals and then sending Helena Walo ’18 off to the state meet in Peoria, Illinois.

Walo finished the three mile race with an incredible time of 19  minutes and 18 seconds. After a long, physically draining season, I wondered how Helena possibly found the motivation to continue improving.

Helena said,  “We all work together and celebrate each other’s victories whether it’s beating a record time or how many bread sticks we can eat. My team is my biggest motivation.”

Walo did not become the headstrong, star cross country runner that she is over night. Ending her season with close to a 6 minute mile took lots of effort and lots of practice. She stressed the importance of eating healthy in order to fuel her body for races and pushing herself both physically and mentally.

What is most admirable about Helena Walo is how humble she remained throughout her successful season. It is easy to let success go to your head but Helena remained a team player.  “Stay humble and work hard” Helena explained.
