On October 4, 2016, Dina Bair of WGN News came to speak to the Regina community about her job as a news anchor, as well as the obstacles she had to face in order to climb the ladder of success.

Bair is the current anchor for WGN Midday News, as well as the lead reporter for “Medical Watch.” According to WGN.com, she reports on WGN Midday News, WGN Evening News, and WGN News at Nine. In her career, Bair has been extremely successful, winning 9 Emmys, along with many other prestigious awards. She was even selected to cover the new election of the Pope in 2013. Like most success stories, however, her success was the result of years of hard work, dedication, and the ability to overcome hardship.

Dina Bair is a two-time breast cancer survivor. The first time she heard the news, she was a student at Northwestern University. Bair did not let this stop her, however. Not only did she make her journalistic dreams a reality; she even graduated on time despite her difficult predicament.

In her presentation, she spent much time talking about the choices that individuals make, and how they shape a person’s future. She stated that one must not only learn to make the right choices, but figure out how to balance one life in the best interest of their personal happiness, as well as the happiness of those around them. Bair made the choice to persevere in her education, despite hardships.

Another talking point in the speech was the importance of living happily and having faith. She told the students the story of a rainbow that appeared in the sky after the death of her brother, who died of a blot clot in his 30s. When the children of her brother asked her why they hadn’t received a sign from heaven, two rainbows appeared in the sky minutes later, one for each child.

She is a strong believer in her faith, and stated to all of us, “My message to you is that God talks to you if you talk to him and if you listen.”

Ultimately, because of her strength and perseverance, Dina Bair is a role model to all, especially young women.
