Chicago’s Christkindlmarket Celebration Has Much History
Fun holiday traditions to do in Chicago
The Christmas holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ has expanded beyond its religious ways and has transformed into a cultural phenomenon observed by both believers and non-believers. The meaning of Christmas often evolves from the Americanized childhood fantasy – to the act of giving as people grow older. Chicago’s Chisrtkindlmarket shows exactly this mature view of the holidays that anyone and everyone can enjoy.
This market performs the act of giving people the chance to experience a German-style holiday, as this event was inspired by the 16thcentury Christkindlmarket in Nuremberg, Germany – one of the first outdoor markets of its kind. The first ever market in Chicago was in 1996 when The German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest Inc. (GACC Midwest) was trying to find exciting ways to promote bilateral trade between the USA and Germany.
Visitors can explore products from all around the world and enjoy international food and beverages. Luckily, the price of admission is free for all.
The most popular activity is getting the Christkindlmarket’s annual souvenir mug, which is a must-have for keeping your hands warm. Plus, you can sip the market’s many hot drink options. It is shaped like a boot, but there are new designs every year.
With mugs in hand, visitors then jumpstart on holiday gift shopping by visiting the wide variety of different Christkindlmarket stalls, each selling all kinds of perfect little knickknacks.
Festivals help to refresh and restore us from the daily hardships of living. Relax, have fun, and enjoy the holiday spirit by visiting the Christkindlmarket!
The market is being held at 50 W. Washington Street from Nov. 15 – Dec. 24, 2019. The market is open daily from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
