Disney’s Brave is the story of Merida, a fiery red head princess from Scotland who likes “non-princess” type things, such as archery and riding horses. Merida is very headstrong, determined young girl who is also very brave. Her mother, the Queen, disapproves of Merida’s tom-boy ways- she believes Merida should be acting more like a princess.

Eventually, Merida sadly discovers that she must marry. A group of suitors that are the first born sons of other kings must compete in an archery contest and the winner will be allowed to marry the princess. However, their archery skills prove to be nowhere comparable to hers.

Merida decides to “fight for her own hand” in marriage and compete in the contest since she is technically the first born of a king, too. She surprises everyone hitting a bulls-eye and winning the competition.

Her parents are frustrated and furious, which leads to a huge disagreement within the family. Without thinking, Merida makes a wish that ends up having the potential to divide the entire kingdom, as well as permanently turn her mother into a black bear! Now, it is up to her to courageously set things straight.

Brave is an animated movie full of magic, humor, courage, and life lessons. Merida is a character girls and boys can related to. She is also a very fun character. It is a movie that is perfect for a family movie night.
