Behind the Scenes with Seussical the Musical
Below is a sneak peak into what makes a Regina Dominican play come to life. Follow me as I document life behind the scenes in the fall 2016 production of “Seussical,” which was performed in Regina’s new auditorium on Nov. 18 and Nov. 19, 2016.
Once rehearsal starts, the hall is filled with tons of props and different parts of the set. Amber Kim ’19 is outlining a pink Seuss tree in the hall that will later be placed on the stage. Near Amber, people are running back and forth with paint cans and brushes, rushing over to paint another part of the set. Students complete these tasks while laughing and having fun.
Here we have Bella Neybolsky De Ochoa ’17 braiding Nell Boylen’s ’18 hair in between scenes. Some characters aren’t in scenes for large sections of time, so many people kill time by practicing lines, doing homework, or in this case, braiding hair. Not only is play practice a time to actually bring all the parts of the play together or working through lines, it’s also a time to sit with friends and have fun!
Gabriella LoBianco ’19 has one of the main leads being Maize, a fabulous bird who is incredibly pretty and very show-offish. Here, she is singing to Horton played by Jack Howard ’19, a student of Loyola Academy… in the second act. Now that the auditorium is almost officially complete, we can finally practice on the stage with microphones and props.
Here Shlexis Poole ’17, Kasmira Watson ’17, Jaymillia Booker ’20 and Ms. Heitt ’01 are sewing and cutting clovers to put on a giant blanket. There are so many clovers that need to be put on this blanket that at one point or anther everyone has helped out. I can personally say that it is the most relaxing thing you can possibly do. You just sit in a circle with friends, and some of the crew cut the clovers, while others sew. Even though I’m not on crew, it was still fun to help even a little.
Every once and in awhile, Mr. Hiett will come in with two huge trays just filled to the brim with all kinds of snacks, mostly made by Mrs. Heitt. Every time he brings in th trays, people rush to the choir room to get either the brownies, pound cake or anything else. Either way, it’s always so nice to end a practice with a nice treat or even in the middle of practice, it’s nice to have something sweet just to give you the right amount of energy to keep pushing through, and on top of that they are always so delicious.
