Bass Fishing Makes a Splash
Regina Dominican’s bass fishing team has clearly become popular, as evidenced by all of the new members that have joined this year. This year, there are 15 members, 9 more than last season.
As the season comes to an end, Syeda Fatima ’16 explains why she joined the bass fishing team.
She says, “I wanted to be on a sport at some point while I was at Regina. I’ve fished before and I liked it, so me and a bunch of my friends joined.”
The spring sport has become a fun and relaxing way to finish off the school year. The team practices twice a week at the Skokie Lagoons or Westmoreland Country Club. The team competes in tournaments throughout the season.
At the practices, the fishers learn how to cast their poles, tie on lures, and reel in bass. These skills come in handy at their tournaments.
The team has had two tournaments this season, and the final sectionals tournament is coming up.
Unfortunately, they did not qualify for state following the sectionals tournament. However, the team still had a successful season.
The tournaments are a day event. The team usually needs to be ready in their boat are usually from 6 A.M. to the late afternoon on a Saturday. The team splits up into pairs between two boats and try to catch as many fish as they can. Then they come back to shore for the fish to be weighed and measured. The person who catches the biggest fish is the winner of the tournament, and the team moves on to sectionals.
At the tournament on Saturday April 25, 2015 two Regina girls took 1st and 2nd place. Peyton Flores ’18 won 1st place with 10.5 lbs. of bass and Autumn Kelly ’17 won 2nd place with 6.9 lbs. of bass.
Although it seems like an unusual sport, bass fishing has been said to be one of the best sports at Regina because it is so fun and relaxing.
Finally, Fatima has some positive thoughts for the end of the season– “Hopefully I’ll be able to compete in the sectionals tournament and catch a boat load of bass. ”
