Bass Fishing Angles for a Fun Season
Two awesome things about Regina is our school’s ability to give any girl a spot on (almost) any sports team she wishes to play for, and the diversity in the sports we offer. More specifically, bass fishing welcomes any Regina student to join the team and learn to love the sport of bass fishing.
The Regina varsity bass fishing team practices weekly on the Skokie Lagoon, approximately twice a week. They use a catch-and-release technique, meaning no fish are mortally harmed throughout practices or competitions.
At competitions, scores are based upon the size of the fish, which is more or less based upon the luck of the draw. The bass fishing team’s will participate in the IHSA sectionals on May 6. Regina’s varsity team has eight members on its roster and is led by head coach Casey Kelly. According to the Junior Captain Matea Peric, “Bass Fishing is an outdoor sport that anybody would enjoy. I always hear “it sounds hard” or “I can never do that,” but it’s really fun! It’s really not that bad once you get the hang of it. When you’re a beginner, fishing can seem a little intimidating. But, learning the basics about fishing can set you up for a successful time out on the waters.”
Peric was happy to answer some questions for crown:
How has the season been?
“It’s been really good! The weather this year has been weird, so that prevented us from going out for practice or fishing in general. Other than that, it has been going great.”
How many tournaments have you won/lost?
“So far, our team only had one tournament. Although we lost, we kept a positive attitude. We definitely have the potential to win future tournaments so I’m looking forward to that.”
The bass fisherwomen are lookin forward to their competition, and we wish them the best of luck! Go Panthers!
