May 5: U.S. House passes “Trumpcare”
On May 5, the House of Representatives passed the Trumpcare bill with a 217-213 vote. This was a close vote as only 216 votes are needed to pass the bill on to the Senate. However, the vote many need to be taken again as it is not aligned with the CBO, Congressional Budget Office, and is not proven to save money.
May 14: New French President
On May 14, Emmanuel Macron was elected president of France. He is a member of the En Marche! Party, a party that he founded that stands for liberal and centrist views that want to unite the divided political left and right in France. He won over 66% of the French vote, which is almost a political landslide.
May 18: Times Square Car Crash
On May 18, a vehicle, driven by Richard Rojas, was involved in a crash in Times Square in New York City, NY. Due to the severity of the crash, 22 people were injured and 1 woman died. Rojas was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and 5 vehicle homicides, and 20 attempted murders. He was found with marijuana-laced phencyclidine, in his body system, at the time of the crash.
May 22: Terrorist Attack at Ariana Grande Concert
On May 22, singer Ariana Grande’s concert in Manchester, England was attacked by a 22-year-old suicide bomber. The attack killed 22 people and injured 59 people. Most of the victims were fans of the singer and of a young age. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack and one man has been arrested for his involvement in the bombing.
May 23: South Korea Fires at North Korea
In response to North Korea launching an unidentified projectile, South Korea fired warning shots at its neighbor. The unidentified projectile is suspected to be a drone that flew over South Korea, but this has not been confirmed at the time of press.
