Two Regionals in Three years
The varsity basketball team finished third in the St. Viator’s Christmas tournament, fifth in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference, and was placed in the top 32 teams of Illinois. They finished their season with a 18-11 record.
Maeve Degnan ’17 was named Athlete of the Month by Buffalo Wild Wings, an all-tournament player in the Christmas tournament, and an all-conference player in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC) red division. Degnan led the Panthers in scoring this season.
“The whole program has grown so much in just the past four years,” said senior captain Audrey Jahns.
In the 2011-2012 season the Panthers won a total of six games. Since then, the Panthers have won two regional titles, competed in the sectional finals, and finished in the top five for GCAC playoffs.
“I’m really proud of this program. It involves a lot of work, but there is something very special about every girl giving 100 percent every day,” said Jahns.
The Panthers were ranked fifth in their sectional and defeated Amundsen High School and Johnsburg to make it to sectionals. Unfortunately Anioch High School, the number one school in the sectional, defeated the Panthers on their home court.
“The atmosphere was pretty intimidating because they had too many fans, but I thought our players handled it well. We all gave it our best and didnt leave any regrets. I don’t consider that a loss,” said Degnan.
The Panthers have grown each year and have welcomed many new faces to the team. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for next year.
