The Help

The Help is a powerful tale that takes place in 1963 during the Civil Rights era in Jackson, Mississippi. It stars Emma Stone as Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, a young female journalist who decides to write a book on Civil Rights, but from the point of view of black maids, who are referred to as “the help.”

The film centers around Skeeter’s relationship with two maids in particular, Aibileen Clark, played by Viola Davis, and Minny Jackson, played by Octavia Spencer.  Although these two renowned actresses play roles that were looked down upon in society, they shine out in the movie.  Throughout The Help, Skeeter puts herself in compromising positions to try and get the truth out, putting her reputation, life, and relationships in danger.

The Help is a movie primarily about race.  During the 1960s, race issues were the focus of society, and this movie highlights that.  The fact that a white woman is telling the stories of African American women, trying to help them instead of trying to be superior, showcases a different side of Jackson, Mississippi.

Although the movie is a drama, there are many humorous touches throughout.  With many intertwining story lines and heartbreaking tales, The Help is a movie about women’s empowerment that is sure to make you laugh and cry.
