Kafka and the Cockroach Reinterpreted

The original opening sentence from Franz Kafka’s novella, “The Metamorphosis:

“One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible cockroach. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections. The bedding was hardly able to cover it and seemed ready to slide off any moment. His many legs, pitifully thin compared with the size of the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked.”

“One morning, E woke from bad dreams, she found herself transformed in her bed into a giant cockroach. Skittering out of bed, she moved to the door. The cockroach human went down the stairs and out the door into a busy street. A car was speeding towards the cockroach and splattered the cockroach. Good riddance.”  –E.H.

“On morning, M woke from bad dreams, she found herself transformed in her bed into a giant cockroach. She looked in the mirror and could not believe her eyes. She was the ugliest roach she had ever seen. How did this happen?! Did she do something to deserve this?! M scurried away from the mirror and hid in the corner. She was so confused and had no idea what to do. Then it dawned on her. As a cockroach, M would have the ability to scare away people that bothered her. Knowing this, M jumped for joy. She went to school and watched as people ran away screaming. What a beautiful day!” –M.M.

“One morning, P woke from bad dreams, she found herself transformed in her bed into a giant cockroach. She scrambled out of bed and pranced over to the full length mirror. To her horror, she found she had transformed into a six legged bug. She screamed and watched as her mandible squeaked some unintelligible bug language. This was almost worse as the time she had run out of eyeliner. Maybe now, she would learn to be more respectable of people’s differences.” –M.B.
