Does Pantene Cause Hair Loss?

Social Media Fact-Check

Background

Women from all over the country have come to the internet to share their complaints about their sudden hair loss. The cause? Pantene. Many have claimed that after using Pantene products, they notice reactions such as burning scalps and significant hair loss. After researching the claim, many, Pantene being one of them, have come forward to disprove this allegation.

The rumors began several years ago when the 19-year- old administration assistant, Sophie Peppercorn from Peterborough, UK, used a Pantene shampoo. A short time after applying the shampoo, clumps of Peppercorn’s hair began to fall out. Sophie was devastated. After this story came to light, many others began to compare their similar experiences with Pantene products.

What Sources Are Saying

After conducting a small study of research, claims have been found on both sides of the argument. On one side, there are groups of women that have come together on the internet to share their negative experiences with Pantene. Rhonda D’ettore, a member of the forum website, “Don’t Pay Full”, writes, “Pantene Shampoo made my hair fall out! Beware of this shampoo. I thought I was doing something great, buying into the commercials until my hair fell out in clumps, and it happened to others online as well. It took me a year of using organic shampoos to get my hair growth back”. Others have come to her defense and even share that they have received harsh chemical burns from Pantene products! Yikes! Although, on the other side of the argument, many have come to the defense of Pantene, claiming that they have never had any complaints about the products and instead think highly of them. For example, Luri, also from “Don’t Pay Full”, says “you used Pantene and you experienced hair fall does not mean everyone who is using pantene shampoo will experience hair fall. I have used pantene shampoo and I thing it is a good shampoo”. So what really is the truth? Is Pantene really making consumer’s hair fall out or is the hair loss contributed to something different?

The Facts

According to Hajer Mehrez, writer of the article, “Is Pantene good or bad for your hair”, Pantene is not bad for your hair. Pantene uses the same ingredients as salon brands, and there is no evidence to prove that Pantene is not good for hair. Pantene’s main ingredient is water, which is then followed by Glycol Distearate, Dimethicone, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Citrate, Cocamide Mea, Sodium Xylenesulfonate, Fragrance, Citric Acid Panthenol, Panthenyl, Sodium Benzoate, Polyquaternium-76, Sodium Chloride, Tetrasodium EDTA, and Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate. These names might sound scary, but no ingredient has been known to cause any burning or hair loss. To attempt to find the reasoning behind the hair loss, Ranbir, writer of the article, “Can Pantene products cause hair loss? We dig for the truth”, mentions the factor of stress. She writes about the suggestions of the previously mentioned, Sophie Peppercorn‘s doctor. He suggests that the hair loss was in relations to stress from her young hectic life. Even Pantene came to their own defense when they said, “There is no connection between our products and the reaction”. Whatever the cause, they are confident that their product is not responsible. Pantene shampoo actually has the vitamin B5, which is known to improve the hair’s health.

So, is Pantene really the root cause of the consumer’s hair loss? No! It may be tempting to listen to the scary accusations and stories on the internet, but it all comes down to listening to the facts. And in this case, the facts are that Pantene has no evidence of being bad for hair, rather it having bountiful amounts of vitamins that strengthen and repair hair. To reiterate, the claim that Pantene products cause both excessive amounts of hair loss and chemical reactions is simply not legit.
