An “Enthusiastic Leader” in Student Council President Brigid Broderick

How would you describe your leadership style?
I think I am an invisible leader. When we talk about visible and invisible leadership, an invisible leader is somebody who leads by example and encourages people to come up with their own thoughts and ideas.

Describe the most important quality, value, or characteristic trait that you feel is essential of an effective leader.
I believe that the most important quality of any leader is enthusiasm. I often find myself encouraging the girls on Student Council to be enthusiastic about events because if you are excited about something, then the people around you will be too. A little enthusiasm can go a long way and I have found that to be so true in a leadership position.

What is the hardest part of being a leader?
The hardest part about being a leader is directing your peers. Because I am student council president, not a boss in a workplace setting, sometimes it is difficult to give firm directions to my own classmates. When you tell people what to do you want to be encouraging, not condescending.

What person, famous or not, who has had an impact on you as a leader?
I think my teachers have had the most influence on me as a leader. A few specific ones especially, but I think every teacher I have encountered at Regina has taught me a lesson about leadership. Teachers are the best leaders because they lead us into subjects or areas where we might not always want to be led. They don’t get enough credit.

What advice would you give graduating seniors?
This is a tough one because I am a graduating senior, but I would say try not to stress. Everybody says that senior year goes so fast so we should seize every moment and make the most of it. Don’t spend your time stressing about college or who you are going to take to prom, because stress ruins everything. Enjoy the time we have left here.
