2021 Movies Bring Tears, Action, and Shock

During COVID, moviegoers were deprived of the experience of going to the theaters with a bucket of popcorn and sitting down to see their favorite actors on the big screen. Since the COVID regulations were lifted, we can finally enjoy our favorite pastime again.

This year was a great year for movies, especially sci-fi, action, horror, and drama. Here is a list of the 5 top movies of 2021:

In the sci-fi genre, for our book geeks, “Dune” is the feature adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel. Dune is directed by Denis Villeneuve and the movie stars Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Furgeson. IMDB rates this movie at 8.2/10 stars. In my personal opinion, having not read the books and not understanding much, I thought the movie was beautifully shot and directed. The score to the movie gave me chills every time I heard it. Many of the songs from the movie are now on my playlist. Every shot looked like a work of art. Soren Andersen in his review of the film for The Seattle Times wrote, “So just see it. It’s remarkable.” If you haven’t seen it, I would highly recommend it. It is definitely worth a watch.

For Marvel lovers like myself, “Eternals” is directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao and stars Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, and Salma Hayek. According to IMDB, eternals are “a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilizations.” The movie is beautifully shot and directed. In IMDB audiences reviews they say, “It’s a different kind of Marvel movie, but Eternals still contains all the action, humor, and heart that fans are looking for.” The Eternals are something completely different from the rest of the Marvel cinematic universe. Eternals is a very character-driven story with many plot twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat. In the past, Marvel hasn’t always done a good job of incorporating more diversity into their films, but with Eternals, there are so many lead characters from various backgrounds. They include Phastos, who is the first queer black superhero ever. Eternals has become one of my all-time favorite Marvel movies, and for anyone wondering if they should spend their time and money seeing it, you definitely should.

“Finch,” directed by Miguel Sopouchnik, is set in a dystopian future where the ozone layer is deteriorating. Finch (Tom Hanks’ character) creates a robot to take care of Finch’s beloved dog once he passes away. The CGI in this movie makes the robot seem so real. You end up developing an emotional attachment to each of these characters. I love the way the director and writers make Jeff the robot more charismatic and understanding. It ends up making you feel sorry for him when you know he’s trying his best. The relationship between all three of these characters is honestly one of the most heartwarming performances I’ve ever seen. By the end of this movie, I was drowned in tears. I would definitely recommend this movie if you need a good cry.

Besides these, there have been many other movies that I have seen this year, including “Black Widow,” “Shang-Chi,” and “The Legend of The 10 Rings,” “Cruella,” and “The Suicide Squad.”

The movies that I would love to see that have come out this year are “The French Dispatch” coming from one of my favorite directors, Wes Anderson, “Last Time In Soho,” and “Free Guy.”
