WYSE Team Takes First Place at the Regional Tournament

This year’s Regina WYSE team competed at the Regional Tournament on February 3, 2017 at Oakton Community College. WYSE, also known as the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering, is an academic team for students all across Illinois. Each participant competes in two of the following subjects: Biology, Chemsitry, English, Math, and Physics.

From Regina Dominican, 22 students were chosen to participate in the competition. The varsity team included Kaitlyn Alleman, Elizabeth Gillespie, Elizabeth Hancuch, Gillian King, Rachel Lucas, Emily Miller, Kayley Radler, Miranda Radtke, Xindi Sun, Allison Svachula, Grace Tamisiea, Grace Zhao, and Ying Zhou. Other memebers of the WYSE team include Kendall Barrett, Kyleigh Dalkin, Bisrat Lijam, Margaret McNaughton, Nina Menon, Clover Sang, Yaneli Urquiza, and Helena Walo.

The Regina Dominican WYSE team took first place in their division, allowing them to advance to the Sectional competition. The next competition will be the Sectional tournament at Vernon Hills High School on March 17. If the team does well at this competition, they will qualify to go to State finals at University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in April.

Individual medals that were won included: Elizabeth Hancuch and Katie Alleman for Biology; Xindi Sun, Gillian King, and Kayley Radler for Chemistry; Elizabeth Hancuch, Emily Miller, Beth Gillespie, and Grace Tamisiea for English; Grace Zhao for Math; and Grace Zhao and Kayley Radler for Physics.
