EIstanbul Nightclub Shooting: Jan. 1

On Jan. 1, 39 people were shot dead and 70 people were injured by suspected shooter Abdulkadir Masharipov, a member of ISIL,  during New Years festivities at a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey. This mass shooting has been claimed as a terrorist attack and terrorist group ISIL has taken responsibility for it.


Fort Lauderdale Mass Shooting: Jan. 6

On Jan. 6, 5 people were shot dead and 42 were injured in the Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport, in Broward County, FL.  Suspected shooter, Esteban Santiago-Ruiz, has been taken into custody and has been put on trial in federal court. The shooter is looking at a sentence of life imprisonment.


US Troops Deployed to Poland: Jan. 12

On Jan. 12, US troops were deployed to Poland to support the NATO in showing a force against Russia and to ensure peace of other European nations. Russia views this move as a threat toward their interests and security.


Donald Trump Inauguration: Jan. 20 

On Jan. 20, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States of America. In total, there was an estimated 700,000-800,000 people at the inauguration. Claims were made about this inauguration being the most attended ever; however, Barack Obama’s first inauguration held an estimated 1.8 million.


Women’s March in Washington D.C. Turned Global: Jan. 21

On Jan. 21, feminists from many nations and continents, including Antarctica, protested for equality of the sexes. The main focus of the march, started by the Women’s march in Washington D.C., was to show that women’s rights are human rights and that they need to be defended. Washington D.C. protesters were estimated as three times the size of the inauguration crowd.


March for Life: Jan. 27  

On Jan. 27, women and men against abortion protested for life for all unborn children.  Many activists and politicians against Roe V. Wade gathered together in protest in Washington D.C.
