Lax Player Nora Byrne Makes Brine and Ireland National Teams

Ireland’s 2015 Women’s National Team
Taking a ten hour flight to Dublin, Ireland to try out for Ireland’s National Women’s Lacrosse team might seen like a strange dream to some, but it became a reality for Nora Byrne ’16. Byrne tried out for the team on Halloween 2014. She was named one of the alternates and will play with the team in Prague during August.

“I flew into Dublin and stayed with my Irish relatives for a few days. It was great to see them again,” said Byrne.

Thirty women ranging from age 15-30 tried out with Byrne. The players were mostly adults or college students. Nora was the youngest player chosen for the team.

“It was a bit intimidating in the beginning. There were some Division 1 players from America there, so I was pretty shell shocked. But, after the first practice I became comfortable and excited to continue,” said Byrne.

Day one of the tryouts consisted of a three hour practice, lunch, followed by another three hour practice. The practices include shooting drills, passing, and scrimmages.

During second day of tryouts there was yet another three hour practice similar to the previous day. Byrne was invited to be an alternate on the team. According to Ireland’s Coach Sarah Walsh, the competition for the team was tough.

Walsh states, “At our selection camp in October we had our largest and most competitive turnout to date. After very difficulty decisions, we selected strong, athletic, and balanced team. Twelve are returning players from the 2013 World Cup who were all essential to our success.”

Brine National Team
Byrne also earned a spot to play at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic in late June. She tried out at the Regional tryouts in December and made the team. 60-70 high school students from Wisconsin and Illinois tried out for the team, and Byrne was one of the few invited to compete.

This tournament showcases 16 teams from around the country to compete during this classic. The tournament is a great way to gain exposure for the athletic recruitment process and to be seen by NCAA coaches and scouts.

Lacrosse Club
Byrne is currently playing for the True Lacrosse club based in Elmhurst, Illinois. True Lacrosse plays in elite tournaments throughout the year.

She is looking to play Division 1 lacrosse in college. She is excited to see where her athletic career takes her.
