How Does Regina Dominican Presidential Election Results Compare to Illinois and National Voters?

Nov. 8, 2016 was election day. Citizens across the country went out and voted for a new president as well as other elected offices. Donald Trump was elected president as he won enough states to gain the majority in the Electoral College. However, Hillary Clinton won the national popular vote with a lead of over 2.3 million votes.

Below is a breakdown of the election results from the Regina Dominican High School mock election, the results from Cook County, Illinois, the state of Illinois and the results on a national level.


Regina Dominican High School Mock Election Results

For the Regina Dominican Mock Presidential Election, with 163 ballots cast, Hillary Clinton won with 87 votes, 53.4%; Donald Trump came in second with 52 votes coming out to be 31.9%; Gary Johnson came in third with 11 votes, 6.7%; and Jill Stein came in fourth with 9 votes, 5.5%. 4 Reginites wrote in a candidate.

Cook County Election Results

Cook County’s results, which includes the City of Chicago as well as the village of Wilmette were more in favor for Hillary Clinton than any other result compared in this article. With 97.5% reported, Hillary Clinton won with 1,528,582 (74.4%) of the popular votes. Donald Trump received only 440,213 (21.4%) of the votes. Gary Johnson came in third with 55,900 (2.7%) of the votes, and Jill Stein received 30,520 (1.5%) of the votes.

Illinois Results:

Illinois election results were very similar to Regina’s election results. With 99.1% of the vote in for the state, Hillary Clinton won the 20 electoral votes with 2,977,498 (55.4%). Donald Trump received 2,118,179 (39.4%). Gary Johnson received 3.8% and Jill Stein received 1.4%.

National Results

Comparing the national election results to Regina’s mock election, our country supported Donald Trump more than our school. In the national election, Donald Trump received 290 electoral college votes and 62,139,188 47.1% of all the popular votes. Although Clinton only received 232 electoral votes, she  received 63,964,956, 48.5% of all the popular votes.

Although Clinton received over 2.3 million more popular votes than Trump (at the time of publication date), Trump won the election because he received at least 270 Electoral College votes, which decides the winner  of the election.

As for the third party candidates, Gary Johnson received 3.28% with 4,405,411 of the popular votes. Jill Stein received 1% with 1,386,050 of the popular votes.
