The Regina Basketball Program worked hard all season to make the program one that would be recognized by teams in their Conference. The push resulted in a stronger record than last year’s season. At the time of publishing, the junior varsity had  a record of 13-10 and the varsity’s record stands at 11-12. Both teams won first place at the Guerin Prep Tournament, with wins against competitive teams.

The last official home game for all teams was January 26, 2018. This was a special event as it was Senior Night.  Senior players were recognized for their outstanding commitment to their team and to the basketball program. Seniors, Grace Tamisea, Grace Owens, Kelly French, Shelexis Poole, and Murphy Weiland, all were commended for their work over the course of the season. At senior night, all teams were successful in winning their games. The varsity seniors were upbeat with their performance throughout the year.

Kelly French ‘18 said, “I play Regina Basketball because not only have I been playing it my whole life, but I love representing my school. It is really nice to have girls from all different ages there to support you and the things you do. I have learned a lot about myself. I have been able to realize my strengths and weakness and how to work with them a lot better through basketball.”

Even though this season has to come to a close, the coaches are looking forward to what is ahead and what is in store for the future of Regina basketball. For next year, the coaches hope to increase the positive reputation Regina has and to help Regina advance to Regionals and beyond the IHSA (Illinois High School Association).

“Getting that regional is the first step and every player in the program is a part of that process,” Coach Newton states, “That means we need all 32 players this year focused on getting better as they are coached by some of the best coaches in the area, believing in the process as do we, and understanding that if we all hold the rope we will gain program wide successes of which we can all be proud.”

As the program progresses, the coaches hope for expansion and for many incoming students to participate in the very fun, competitive, and confident building experience.

Junior Varsity player, Emily McNaughton ‘19, expressed, “Regina Basketball has made my friends and I closer as if we were all one big family. It is great to have the alumnae come back and support our program. This shows how strong the relationships of the players and coaches were and are in the program. Basketball has left me with great experiences and knowledge that I will never forget. I am so happy to have such great teammates and coaches!”
