Top Five Movies of the Summer

2016 has been a large year for movies. Yet, this summer had one of the worst recorded sessions in movie history, but there were some quite memorable ones that came out this summer as well. Here are some of the more memorable movies of 2016 along with their total gross (income).

  1. Finding Dory

“Finding Dory” was the sequel to the 2003 movie sensation “Finding Nemo.” After years of hearing brief rumors from Ellen DeGeneres about a sequel, movie-goers were finally able to see it for the first time this summer. It had one of the highest grosses ever bringing in a whopping $481 million. This movie is a fun filled movie perfect for any age.  The animation is some of the prettiest audiences will ever see and contains some of the best animation that Pixar has ever produced, making Finding Dory the best movie of the summer.

2. Captain America: Civil War

As many viewers probably know, Batman vs. Superman was a movie that had the entire country waiting for its arrival. The new “Captain America” movie had to be perfect, due to the slightly same concept of two favorite heroes battling against one another. They did make it perfect. It wasn’t a boring all-action film. Every part of the movie kept the audience on edge to see what would happen next. Not only this but viewers got a glimpse of the new “Spiderman,” which looks to be a great upcoming film. “Captain America: Civil War” brought in $407 million for its total gross, making this movie the second best movie of the summer.

3. The Secret Life of Pets

When the trailer for “The Secret Life of Pets” first came out, audiences pegged this film as a must see movie. With more analyzing, the movie followed a similar plot line as “Toy Story,” but with pets instead of toys.  This movie was not produced by Disney, but still… In the end, the film was an average movie. The animation was decent but nothing to rave about. Though, the total gross for this movie came out to be $358 million.

4. Suicide Squad

When the trailer for “Suicide Squad” was first debuted at the San Diego 2015 Comic Con, there was a tremendous buzz as a must see movie. Throughout the entire year, new trailers were aired on YouTube and gained tons of views within the first day it was posted. The production company also released tracks periodically before the movie aired gathering even more steam for the movie. So when Aug. 6 finally came, tons of fans flocked to the theater to see this movie.  Unfortunately, the film was disappointing. It was very rushed and it seemed as if a lot of scenes were missing. The plot was also very hard to follow, if you never read the comics. Thus, making it quite obvious that the movie was not really ready to be in theaters.  However, these factors didn’t stop this movie from gaining a whole heck of a lot of money. “Suicide Squad” brought in a total of $297 million, coming in fourth place, though not one of the best.

5. Star Trek Beyond

Though I have not seen some of the original “Star Trek” shows, many find themselves a fan of the franchise. After seeing “Star Trek into Darkness,” I, like many others, was quite excited to see the brand new Star Trek. There was not tons of excitement around the movie, but I did make it a point to see it. I was not disappointed in the least. Though this movie did get a lot of bad reviews, I thought it was fantastic. It was exciting and action packed, and very funny at times. The effects were also wonderful. For me it was no wonder why this movie brought in $154 million, earning its place in fifth.
