She’s the Man

Ever felt like you’re living in a man’s world? In She’s the Man, main character Viola Hastings experiences this- literally!

After an announcement that the girls soccer team will be cut from the school program, Viola (played by Amanda Bynes) asks her coach if she can try out for the boys’ team.  Her coach declines the opportunity, claiming that women are not as capable as men.  When her brother decides to take a two week hiatus from boarding school, Viola takes the opportunity to pose as her brother so that she can join her brother’s soccer team and prove her coach and ex-boyfriend wrong.

Under a cropped wig and sporting sideburns, Viola’s alias “Sebastian” encounters an assortment of high school drama- including peer pressure, trying to please pesky parents, and a budding romantic interest in her roommate, Duke (Channing Tatum)- all while trying to keep her true identity a secret!

Watchers be warned:  the plot is by no means realistic.  Bynes’ interpretation of a dude is so off base, there’s no way that people wouldn’t catch on to Viola’s shenanigans.  However that’s what makes the movie so great- the ridiculousness is laugh out loud hysterical!

Props to William Shakespeare, whose clever comedy Twelve Nights inspired the plot of this 2006 cult classic.

All in all, She’s the Man has been around for 9 years, but is one of the most popular chick flicks because no matter how many times you watch it, the comedy- along with a dose of female empowerment- never gets old!
